I just learned that Donald Norman is coming out with a new book, "Emotional Design", in which he discusses his campaign to ensure that products are enjoyable to use as well as effective to use. The book is scheduled to come out in January 2004, but until then, you can whet your appetite with Norman's article, "Emotion and Design", check out the table of contents of the book, or read Norman's interview with ACM Ubiquity, entitled "Emotion and Affect".
Jakob Nielsen (Donald Norman's partner at the Nielsen/Normal Group) wrote, "Once we achieve ease of use, we'll need additional usability methods to further strengthen joy of use" in his July 7, 2002 Alertbox article, "User Empowerment and the Fun Factor".
