On Towns Named "Orange"

March 28, 2003

Why are there so many towns around the U.S. named Orange? There are no towns named Green, Blue, Red, or Yellow. And it doesn't make sense for these towns to be named after fruit - some towns named Orange are in Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts - certainly not prime orange-growing territory. Besides, there are no towns called Apple, Peach, or Blueberry.

(Cedrus tells me that the town names were probably borrowed from the name of a British city, which itself was probably named for a duke whose name was Orange.)
