The End of the Galaxy as We Know It

March 26, 2003

What would happen to society if our galaxy was due to collide with another galaxy in 10 years? 100 years? 1 year?

We could not escape. Even if we built spaceships, we couldn't get away with enough distance before the galaxies collide. We can't nuke the other galaxy - this isn't an extinction-level event (ELE) type of meteor where there's at least a chance of escaping. This is it. The end of the galaxy as we know it. There is no escape. We have no future.

How would people react in each of the different time scenarios? Some might be fearful, while some might be comfortable with fate being out of their hands. Some will try to understand and analyze the situation.

In the 100-year scenario, would people be hopeful of escape, despite impossible odds? Would society continue to strive to be the best it can be? Would humanity go out on a high note?

In the 10-year scenario, would people continue to reproduce? Would this be a chance for worldwide peace, or a chance for throwing last punches? Would people be less or more frugal, religious, open, or loving?

In the 1-year scenario, would people stop working to be with their loved ones? Would society collapse? Would life seem hopeless? Would murder and suicide increase? Would the world become lawless?
